Battle of the Somme

Next year marks the 90th anniversary of the Battle of the Somme and, new for 2006, Battlefield specialist Leger Holidays has launched a once-in-a-lifetime holiday to be there on the day.

July 1, 1916 marked the start of the Battle of the Somme, the bloodiest day in the history of the British Army, and the World War I battle is one of the major new breaks featured in Leger Holidays’ 2006 Battlefields brochure.

Leger, the leading provider of European Battlefield tours, has six new Battlefield holidays for 2006, but it is the Battle of the Somme, 90 years on, that is one of its most eagerly anticipated Battlefield holiday launches.

Led by a specialist Battlefield guide, who brings to life the remarkable historical tales of frontline warfare, the five-day ‘Remembering The Somme’ holiday follows the course of one of the world’s most infamous battles.

Revisiting the first day of the Somme, it travels along the line from Gommecourt to Thiepval, journeying through the sites of No Man’s Land, then visiting the memorials and trenches between Pozieres and Butte de Warlencourt.

Prices for this five-day coach tour start from as little as £219 with 16 departures in 2006. The company is also providing a special anniversary tour which will attend the Official Ceremony at Thiepval Memorial on 1 July 2006 – this four-day trip starts from £199.
