Learning to surf without going to the beach seems an unlikely scenario but that is exactly what visitors to the new Swansea Leisure Centre in the South Wales city will be able to do when it opens in December. The revolutionary Surf Stream will be part of a network of pools, slides and waves enabling novices and experts alike to try stand-up and bodyboard surfing in a huge indoor water park which will also include 'Masterblaster' – the world's first uphill water slide.
The water park will form the centrepiece of a £32 million redevelopment of Swansea Leisure Centre. It will also incorporate a sports and exhibitions hall, Wales' biggest fitness arena with more that 160 items of cutting edge equipment, a health spa, treatments centre and a café bar. Swansea, birthplace of Dylan Thomas, is on the South Wales coast 180 miles west of London and is home to the National Waterfront Museum and nearby the Gower Peninsula offers beautiful golden beaches and the opportunity to surf in real waves.
