Music lovers enjoy Mozart on wheels with Headwater!

The 250th anniversary of Mozart's birthday on the 27th January heralds the start of the Year of Mozart in his native city of Salzburg. The opening of the new Mozart Museum this week is the first in a packed calendar of events from lunchtime concerts to evening recitals in the fortress.

This year’s Salzburg Festival (July 24th-August 31st) will showcase all 24 of Mozart’s operas. All of his string quartets will be performed on selected dates between February and October in his former residence.

With so many musical performances it’s likely that the hotels in Salzburg will be very busy. So Headwater’s new Classic Salzburg Cycling tour might be just the answer to enjoy the festival atmosphere and still beat the crowds.

Following a circular itinerary to the East of Salzburg, you pedal along undemanding, flat valley trails from hotel to hotel (we move your bags for you). There’s a “free day” in each stop so there’s plenty of time to see the sights. You divide your time between the Alpine lakes and charming villages that lie in flower-filled meadows just outside Salzburg.

The highlight of your route is the approach to Salzburg from Lake Mattsee. The city shimmers below you, framed by the snow capped Alps, as you freewheel beside the lazy Salzach River and into the city itself. Then, following dedicated cycling trails through the historical centre, your route is bordered by ornate Baroque palaces and churches as you head south to the charming village of Niederalm. Here, you can cycle into town to take in a concert recital, climb up to the fortress for breathtaking city views or enjoy a visit to the Mozart museum on your “free” day. And there’s still more time to fit in a trip to the opulent Hellbrun Palace as you cycle onwards into the Salzburg Lake District to finish your tour at beautiful Lake Mondsee.

Headwater’s new Classic Salzburg Cycling holiday departs between May 13th and September 22nd. It is priced from £669 for self drive. The price includes 8 nights half board accommodation in mainly **** hotels, bike hire, cycling map/route notes and bags moved for you as you cycle. Air prices (using Austrian Airlines via Vienna) start from £967.
