A New Look back

A century of style and ten years of the New Look will be flaunted in Normandy when France celebrates the centenary of one of the world's greatest fashion designers. Christian Dior takes centre stage in his home town of Granville.

The pioneer of refreshing and liberated couture in the post war era, Dior will forever be remembered for his New Look. For the first time, the key outfits from the decade 1947-1957 will be seen in one place. Keynote signature ensembles from 22 collections will be the highlight of the exhibition Dior, Homme du Siècle at the Musée Christian Dior in Granville on Normandy's Cotentin Peninsula from May 15-September 25.

Gathered from as far afield as New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art, these clothes will be displayed in the house where the artist was born on January 21 1905. The exhibition will look at how growing up in Normandy affected the young designer and will focus on how his meetings with artists between the wars influenced his later work, as well as looking at the effect that his own designs have had on contemporary designers.

As well as the exhibition in the house, the museum's gardens will offer a new attraction, an exhibition of fragrances and perfumes. The garden looks out over the sea towards the Channel Islands, and like the house, has been restored to the style of its 1920s heyday. This year, a tea room will open in the museum at the beginning of the season on May 15. Admission to the house costs €5 and to the gardens is free.
