Brno Becomes One Big Amusement Park

Brno, the largest city in South Moravia, is preparing for the beginning of the tourist season in style. Watched over by the castles of Špilberk and Veve?í, a unique festival of entertainment called Brno – A City in the Heart of Europe, will bring together lovers of the theatre, sport, ballooning, racing cars and fireworks, and promises to be an interesting event for all.

A City in the Heart of Europe festival (www.bmue.cz), set to take place from May 20 – June 5, 2005 will open with a brand new event – The Brno Museum Night. On Friday May 20, citizens and tourists will be able to visit Brno’s museums, galleries and exhibition spaces in the evening and during the night free of charge, and a series of events will also be taking place. During the event a special bus will run between the various sites.

The greatest attraction at the festival will be the sixth firework competition called Ignis Brunensis (May 21 – June 3, 2005), which has become one of the most important firework festivals in Europe. Visitors will be able to watch a total of six shows all set to music. And it will not only be fireworks filling the sky during the festival as hot air balloons will hang over Brno from June 2 until June 5, 2005 as part of the largest hot air balloon meet in the Czech Republic, the so-called Balloon Jam (www.balloonjam.cz). At night the balloons on the ground with their burners still on may remind visitors of huge light bulbs.

The students of the Drama Department of the Janá?ek Academy will also be entertaining the crowds. For two days (June 3 – 4, 2005) they will be putting on street theatre performances in the city centre. The festival programme also promises numerous concerts of popular, folk and classical music. Those who love to shop will enjoy the traditional craft fair. Sports fans haven’t been forgotten either. As part of the festival the Brno Trade Fair Run – Autosalon Grand Prix (2.6.) will take place, as well as a motor show, the Autosalon Brno (June 4 – 9, 2005) (www.bvv.cz).
