Ordrupgaard's new extension doubles the museum's total area and adds new and modern facilities for the public as well as better facilities for the collection. The Architect is Zara Hadid.
In March 2001, Ordrupgaard organised a competition on the design of an extension to the museum. The extension was to include exhibition rooms for both special exhibitions and for the permanent collection in order to improve space and conservation conditions as well as create new and improved facilities for the public, a foyer, a café and a multi-purpose hall. Seven architectural firms participated in the competition.
The jury concluded its task 28 September 2001 when the jurors unanimously decided to designate the proposal from Zaha Hadid Architects as the best proposal.
Zaha Hadid has based her project on a strategy where the landscape is decoded, interpreted and translated into diagram forms that lead to the formation of a number of structural models. Through this working method, she has managed to incorporate the complex programme demands in an elegant, spacial shape with architectonically surprising flows of spaces. It is a brilliant architectonic expression that will not only be an experience in itself, it will also promote extraordinary quality experiences in connection with the presentation of the museum's works of art. Zaha Hadid has formed an elegant, unique building, which both underscores the special atmosphere of the place and clearly carries it into a new era.
Re-opening in August 2005
Ordrupgaard's new extension doubles the museum's total area and adds new and modern facilities for the public as well as better facilities for the collection. The museum's future foyer will be located in the new extension. The museum expects to re-open August 2005.
