In late May and early June this year, Czech museums and galleries will be offering non—traditional tours and other events as part of the so—called Museum Nights Festival. A total of 136 participating museums and galleries from all over the country have prepared as many as 75 exciting events, all of which promise an amazing experience for visitors.
The Museum Nights Festival (www.muzejninoc.cz) will be held from May 20 to June 4, 2005 and will culminate in the Prague Museum Night on June 4, 2005. This event aims to present Czech cultural heritage at unusual times of day and in an unorthodox way. A total of more than 130 institutions and over 150 venues will participate in this event. In Prague alone, almost forty museums and galleries will be open on June 4th, including Prague Castle (www.hrad.cz) and the National Gallery (www.ngprague.cz).
By organising this event, the museums and galleries are stepping out of the shadow into the limelight and are trying to “illuminate” the towns and cities within their “jurisdiction”. This is also quite clearly demonstrated by the accompanying programme. For illustration, let us mention for example the dance performance in the Museum of Decorative Arts in Prague (www.upm.cz), organised in cooperation with the Tanec Praha dance ensemble, the fashion show in Náprstkovo muzeum, concerts in the Czech Museum of Music, or a puppet performance and an evening of “film archaeology” in the main National Museum building. The central focus of the Museum Night in the National Museum (www.nm.cz) will be the general reconstruction of the building.
This year the Prague public transport authorities will provide special transport links between the individual sites of the event. The main interchange station will be the Starom?stská metro stop on Jan Palach Square. The Museum Nights event is organised thanks to cooperation between the National Museum (www.nm.cz), the Association of Museums and Galleries (www.cz-museums.cz) and the Dopravní podnik hlavního m?sta Prahy, a.s. transport authority (www.dpp.cz). Potential visitors will certainly be pleased to know that all the events, except for those held in Prague municipal buildings, will be free of charge.
