Transformation of South Bank concert hall begins

New restaurants to open at the Royal Festival Hall in June will mark the first phase of a £91 million redevelopment of the concert hall on London’s South Bank. Wagamama, Strada and EAT are the first tenants for riverside retail spaces at ground level.

The main refurbishment work on the hall’s auditorium and foyers begins in July. It reopens to the public on late 2006, with the official opening expected in January, 2007. The project will re-establish the hall as one of the world’s best concert venues, with greatly enhanced acoustics and improved audience comfort. During closure the South Bank Centre will continue to present a full programme of concerts, recitals and exhibitions in the Queen Elizabeth Hall, Purcell Room and Hayward Gallery.
