Zeeliederenfestival - Chantey festival

Zeeliederenfestival - Chantey festivalThe Chantey Festival is a fun music festival during which choirs from all corners of the globe sing chanteys. This maritime festival has developed into quite a tradition. Choirs not only perform in the museum's inner courtyard and on the jetty, but also on the Christiaan Brunings. A choir performs during a trip on this sailing ship, which is over 100 years old.

Chanteys
Chanteys have been sung since the 19th century, mainly on board of the big sailing vessels. They are sung in a range of languages, but the most common language is English. These songs of the sea were a great help in creating a rhythm in the daily work. They enabled the sailors to carry out their heavy work together. The songs lyrics are about saying goodbye, the dangers, the women, adventure and the desire for the homebound voyage.
