From the Tour de France Grand Depart to aural art on the Underground and innovative sculpture on city rooftops – London's coming events are as diverse as ever this spring and summer.
Travellers using the London Underground's Knightsbridge Underground station this year will be treated to the sounds of African elephants, Californian sea lions and grasshoppers while they wait for their train. Running for the whole of 2007 to celebrate 100 years of the Piccadilly Line, 'Zoorama' by Heather and Ivan Morrison presents a different migratory animal each week to be heard amongst the platform announcements.
The Bank of England Museum will be hosting a special free exhibition tracing the design, history and security of banknotes. 'Security by Design' (March 29-Oct. 26) features the earliest handwritten Bank of England paper money alongside the latest banknote, the 'Adam Smith £20' and examines the evolution of the notes and the devices used to avoid counterfeiting. The first major London showing of the work of Antony Gormley will be at The Hayward Gallery in the Southbank Centre this summer. 'Antony Gormley: Blind Light' (May 17-Aug. 19) will feature new monumental works specially conceived for the Hayward Gallery's spaces and one of the largest ever public art commissions, Event Horizon, which will transform the London skyline with sculptural casts of the artist's body on rooftops and public walkways. For the first time in its 100 year history the biggest annual sporting event in the world, the Tour de France, will be starting in England this summer. The start of the Tour – The Grand Depart – will take place in London and Kent over three days (July 6-8) and visitors will be able to see over 200 of the world's best cyclists battle for the yellow jersey in Stage One passing close to some of London's major landmarks such as Big Ben, the London Eye and St. Paul's Cathedral. www.tourdefrancelondon.com.
