Chinese Cuisine Week

Chinese Cuisine WeekLondoners will have the opportunity to enjoy some of the best of Chinese cookery during Chinese Cuisine Week - a key event in China in London 2006, the largest celebration of Chinese culture the capital has ever seen.

The week, organised by Chinatown - The Magazine and sponsored by Tiger Beer and Loon Fung Supermarkets, will run in nine London Chinese restaurants from the 20th to the 26th of March 2006. During the week participating restaurants will feature special menus offering Londoners a unique chance to taste and experience the diversity and distinctiveness of regional dishes from throughout China.

Dishes on offer include Beggar's Chicken, which - according to legend - was invented by a Hangzhou beggar who caught and stole a chicken. The story goes that because the beggar had no stove, he packed the chicken by using several lotus leaves, and sealed the chicken with clay, then baked it on a simple fire. A version of this dish is eaten in many restaurants in China today.

Chinese cookeryOther dishes include Buddhist Monk’s Vegetables in Crispy Taro Ring, Stirred Fried Sharks Fin with Egg White, Mango Fillet Steak, and Pomelo Peel, which is made out of the peels of the succulent Pomelo fruit. Pomelo peels are also used by children to make lanterns during the Moon festival. The menus at each restaurant differ and can be viewed on the Chinese Cuisine Week website – www.chinesecuisineweek.co.uk

The week also offers a chance to win a pair of air tickets to Beijing, China, courtesy of Reliance Tours. Diners need to leave their business cards with the restaurant they eat in to enter the lucky draw.

Ken Livingstone, the Mayor of London said:

China in London 2006 is the largest celebration of Chinese culture ever seen in the capital. There is an incredible array of activities across London, offering something for everyone. It is fitting that food is a key part of these celebrations. Chinese Cuisine Week offers Londoners the chance to experience the diversity of Chinese cookery and try distinctive regional dishes that are not usually on the menu.

William Ong, Founder of Chinatown – The Magazine said:

Chinatown – The Magazine is proud to present what promises to be a mouth-watering six days. I encourage Londoners to take this opportunity discovering the exotic flavours of China right in the centre of London.
