Full details of Britain’s major, new food festival have been unveiled in Herefordshire. The Flavours of Herefordshire Food Festival on October 21st and 22nd will offer visitors to this most rural of English shires the chance to explore some of the places and meet some of the people who make, rear and grow food with great taste.
A true reflection of the Herefordshire way of life, the two day celebration of local food and drink is based squarely on the belief that food is a source of pleasure. But the line-up of events for the weekend will also ensure that everyone visiting the event has fun in discovering some of the county’s most cherished and traditional flavours.
Respected chefs and TV personalities Sophie Grigson and John Torode will both be involved in the inaugural event, which will feature a full timetable of tastings, talks, cookery demonstrations, hands-on and educational activities, and ample opportunities to meet the makers. And organisers want visitors to return home with full stomachs, bulging shopping baskets, and a completely new outlook on how to source and use local food and drink.
The complete schedule of events for the weekend is contained in the brand new Flavours of Herefordshire Food Festival leaflet, which is available free of charge by e-mailing hfdsfoodfestival@btinternet.com or by telephoning 01432-260621. Further information can also be found on www.visitherefordshire.co.uk.
The new food festival takes its name from the long-running awards scheme which for the past eight years has been rewarding local businesses for the use and promotion of local produce. The scheme is regularly highlighted as one of the very best examples in the UK of how to preserve and develop distinctive, regional flavours. The 2006 competition is currently well under way, and the Gala Awards Dinner for this year’s winners will be held at Hereford Racecourse on the eve of the food festival.
A slow food convivium has also recently been created in Herefordshire, and anyone wanting to learn more about this will be welcome to join-in with tastings around the 'Convivial Table' at the food festival.
The weekend also coincides with the ever-popular Cider Festival, and a special vintage bus service will provide the link between that, the food festival and Hereford railway station.
Present estimates suggest that up to 8,000 visitors are likely to attend the Flavours of Herefordshire Food Festival at Hereford Racecourse. Admission prices are £5 for adults and £2 for 10-16 years olds (£3.50 for senior citizens). A two-day pass is also available, priced £8.
