The former London headquarters of one of Britain’s most important medical research charities is reopen as a visitor attraction in June 2007.
The spacious building at 183 Euston Road, belonging to the Wellcome Trust which was set up through the will of philanthropist Sir Henry Wellcome in 1936, is being transformed into a public venue. The attraction promises to offer an “intelligent and experimental” look at the science, history and culture of medicine.
Highlights include permanent and temporary exhibitions showcasing science, art and history; the renowned Wellcome Library, a rich collection based around the history of medicine over 3,000 years; and a conference centre, bookshop and café. Upstairs there will be a permanent installation of the popular British Museum exhibition of 2003, Medicine Man, showcasing hundreds of fascinating objects that belonged to founder Sir Henry Wellcome. The private charity, funded with an endowment of £11 billion, is independent from governments, industry and donors. Website: www.wellcome.ac.uk
