'Rite of Spring' is a brand new music festival in Reykjavik, Iceland, being held for the first time this year between 27th and 30th April. Salsa Celtica, the UK’s leading folk fusion group, are among the headliners.
Icelandair is teaming up with Mr. Destiny, promoter of Iceland’s biggest music festival, Iceland Airwaves, to establish a new, more ‘alternative’ festival called Rite of Spring showcasing cutting edge folk, jazz and World music. The aim is to build a reputation similar to that of Iceland Airwaves, lauded for its high quality mix of independent music and its use of intimate venues in Europe’s most northerly capital.
While Iceland already attracts acts including The Zutons, Juliette and the Licks and BRIT Award-nominated Antony and The Johnsons - for Iceland Airwaves and other events - the musical vision of Reykjavik Rite of Spring is completely different. The line up will combine local talent, influenced by the rugged landscape and vibrant heritage of Iceland, and artists from around the world.
“The Icelandic music scene continues to expand and there is a distinctive Icelandic sound growing in popularity and influence around the world. The first Rite of Spring festival promises to bring Reykjavik alive with the sound of a new rhythms.”
Acts confirmed for this first Rite of Spring music festival include Scottish Latin American folk fusion group, Salsa Celtica, fresh from their UK tour and the album launch on 6th March of their latest album, ‘El Camino’; Icelandic music pioneers and jazz–funksters Mezzoforte; haunting Serbian gypsy octet Kal, and Stórsveit Nix Noltes - Icelandic musicians with a passion for Balkan folk music. More acts will be announced shortly.
Icelandair offers return flights from London Heathrow, Manchester or Glasgow and a Rite of Spring pass allowing universal event entry from just £265, including tax. Call Icelandair on 0870 787 4020 or visit www.icelandair.co.uk to book online.
