One of England’s outstanding cultural centres reopens on May 21 following a major redevelopment and ‘reinvention’ by the original architect, Lord Foster. The Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts, in the Eastern England city of Norwich, was built to house the Sainsbury Collection of world art, featuring works by Degas, Henry Moore, Francis Bacon, Alberto Giacometti and many more.
It reopens, following a 21-month refurbishment which includes new exhibition areas, an enlarged shop and reception area, a new café and a link between the main building and an extension wing, as a bright new gallery with lots for the culture lover to enjoy. The launch exhibition, Pacific Encounters, Art and Divinity in Polynesia 1760-1860 (May 21 – August 13), is a sumptuous exploration of 18th century Polynesia as seen through the eyes of early collectors and featuring the voyages of Captains Bligh, Cook and Vancouver. Many items are displayed for the first time in the UK. Admission is free. Tel 01603 593199. Website: www.scva.ac.uk
