The grounds of a Dorset castle built by an Elizabethan adventurer is the unlikely setting of a competition to find the strongest person in Britain this summer.
The Ironman UK event (August 21) involves a 3,800 metre swim in the lake at Sherborne Castle, a 112-mile cycle ride and a full marathon of 26 miles, both starting and finishing at the castle. The competition has attracted 1,500 entrants, who will be competing for the chance to participate in world championships in Hawaii.
The grounds boast two castles, the most recent of which was built by Sir Walter Raleigh in 1594 but has been home to the Digby family since 1617. Landscape gardener Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown created the 50-acre lake in 1753. Sherborne is 129 miles south-west of London. Tel: 01935 813182. Website: www.ironmanuk.com
