The Earth from above

The international exhibition success, the photo exhibition THE EARTH FROM ABOVE, is back in Copenhagen in the period of January 6th - April 2nd 2006.

Copenhagen was one of the first cities outside France that became aware of the French photographer Yann Arthus-Bertrand's personal photo documentation of the beauty and decay of the Earth. Now the exhibition has returned in a bigger and updated version and can be enjoyed in an indoor gallery version in the former department store, Daells Varehus in Fiolstræde, just next to The Skt. Petri Hotel, in the centre of Copenhagen.

Indoor exhibition
The exhibition consists of 150 pictures plus a 200 m2 big map of the world that illustrates the geographic span of the exhibition. Furthermore the exhibition is supplemented with informative information on sustainable development. In this connection educational material has been prepared for school classes.

The Danish organizers of the exhibition, EarthMatters International, have carried through exhibitions of Yann Arthus-Bertrand's pictures around Europe for the last five years. With this Winter exhibition in Copenhagen it is the first time they arrange the exhibition indoors:

- Unlike the outdoor exhibitions this gallery version is planned as a concentrated experience of 150 carefully chosen pictures. And because Yann Arthus-Bertrand is constantly developing his series of pictures there are quite a lot of new pictures included in the re-exhibition in Copenhagen, - pictures that have never been showed in public before.

-The photographer's personal picture of the state of the Earth here and now must touch the spectator. The sharply contrasting pictures from overcrowded cities with their architectural aesthetics to deserted villages struck by of death and disaster is an appalling documentation of a world suffering badly from its demographic and industrial development.

New pictures describing the Earth
Since the exhibition was shown for the first time in Copenhagen it has been expanded with new pictures several times and this is exactly one of the photographer's principal ideas: to continue his work describing the development of nature and the Earth. A number of the new pictures from the exhibition include among others pictures from Yann Arthus-Bertrand's horrifying revisit to Sri Lanka after the tsunami catastrophe and to New Orleans after the hurricane earlier this year (2005).

A lifelong project
THE EARTH FROM ABOVE is a lifelong project for Yann Arthus-Bertrand. Totally he has spent more than 15 years carefully researching the territories he has chosen. He has flown across all continents in more than 100 countries and has spent more than 3.000 flying hours in a helicopter across the Antarctic, Alaska, the Argentine, Australia, Siberia as well as Africa. According to Yann Arthus-Bertrand the exhibition is the attempt of a citizen of the world to communicate his personal vision of the world in a new millennium.

Around the World
The French photo exhibition was presented first time in Copenhagen in 2001 - around 500.000 - 600.000 visitors saw the exhibition at the unique placing around the square at Kgs. Nytorv in center of town.

In the meantime the exhibition has travelled all around the World. All the big cities of the world have queued up to show the exhibition and it is estimated that between 50 and 60 million people have experienced Yann Arthus-Bertrand?s pictures.

Admission free
The exhibition is open every day of the week between 10.00 - 20.00 until April 2nd 2006.
Free admittance during the entire period.
