A landmark concert venue in the Welsh capital, Cardiff is one of only seven centres world-wide to stage Wagner’s renowned Ring Cycle by the Kirov Opera Mariinsky Theatre from St. Petersburg, Russia. The epic story, told in four operas, will reside at the acclaimed Wales Millennium Centre in Cardiff Bay this autumn (November 30 – December 3). The 19-hour mythical masterpiece will be conducted by artistic director of the Mariinsky Theatre, Valery Gergiev.
Wales Millennium Centre opened in November 2004, constructed almost entirely from Welsh materials, it has become an icon of this Celtic country. It is home to seven of Wales’s arts and cultural organisations.
As well as holding major concerts it is a good-value destination for visitors, as many events are free. There are free lunchtime concerts – ranging from classical music recitals and soloists to brass bands, jazz and poetry or storytelling – on most days, and three daily free performances at weekends. There are also free children’s activities in the interactive Arts Explorer gallery, and no charge for the art exhibition featuring Welsh artists. Cafés and restaurants on the ground floor include Brazz, run by Kit Chapman who is known for his use of high quality, local produce.
