This year marks the 500th anniversary of the last great jousting tournament in Wales, at Carew Castle in Pembrokeshire and to celebrate the castle will be recreating this five day event with a series of re-enactments, storytelling and concerts (May 2-7).
In 1507 a host of knights were welcomed to Carew to honour Sir Rhys ap Thomas and his admission into the Order of the Garter. Celebrations included hunting, feasting, music, dancing, a ride to Lamphey Palace for mass by the Bishop of St. Davids and a spectacular jousting tournament.
Highlights of Carew 500: The Great Tournament include:
- A concert of early and sacred music in Carew Church featuring the Quaynotes Choir (May 3 - £6).
- A cavalcade of horses to Lamphey Palace with free viewing from the Lamphey Showground.
- Two days of re-enactment of the Great Tournament (May 6-7) with jousting, falconry, archery, craft demonstrations and early music with Medieval re-enactment groups (adults £8).
Carew Castle is in south west Wales, 90 miles from Cardiff, and overlooks a 23 acre millpond and the only restored tidal mill in Wales.
