So much for the culinary power of Jamie Oliver and Heston Blumenthal, the UK seems to be stuck in a cookery rut according to a study released today by the Honey Association. Of those questioned, a staggering 70% said traditional or simple would best describe their cooking style.
The study, commissioned for the eighth National Honey Week (13 – 19 February), looked at the nation’s attitude toward cooking. The results reveal that, as a nation, we find cooking quite stressful – although it’s women who appear to boil over more easily than their male counterparts; 71% of females admit to finding cooking taxing, whereas only 54% of men find work in the kitchen stressful. Perfecting timings for different dishes seems to be the major cause of stress, closely followed by finding inspiration for recipes.
At a time when celebrity chefs appear to enjoy such high recognition, it seems we Brits would actually rather look toward the internet for a special recipe than one of the many celebrity cook books or TV programmes available. In fact, 45% of us actually go online in search of inspiration if we are planning to cook a special meal to impress a guest.
Surprisingly, the techno-friendly younger generation (16-24 years) appears, in this instance, to shun technology in favour of maternal expertise and wisdom. Over a third think ‘mother knows best’ in the kitchen and would choose her as the first stop in the search for a great new recipe.
The Honey Association has devised a range of quick and simple recipes to help broaden every chef’s repertoire, and make life less stressful for us all in the kitchen.
Brian Butcher, Chairman of the Honey Association said: “Honey is a store cupboard essential that can help turn a simple dish into something really delicious.
“We commissioned this research to get a better understanding of the nation’s attitude toward preparing food and cooking in general. Interestingly, almost half of those sampled said it was important that the food they ate was natural in origin, which is really great news for honey, a natural substance with nothing added or taken away.”
