It might be all about pasta, Pot Noodle and baked beans at a students house, but when it comes to the university restaurant, today's under graduates are being fed by top chefs who wouldn't be out of place in the kitchen of a fine dining restaurant.
To highlight the quality of food available in our universities, Hotelympia 2006, the UK’s largest dedicated foodservice show, to be held at ExCeL between the 19th and 23rd February 2006 will see the top ten university chefs in the country battle it out to be crowned “University Chef of the Year”.
Sponsored by TUCO (The University Caterers Organisation), the event will see each chef prepare, cook and present a two-course meal that would not look out of place in a Michelin star restaurant. The brief also stipulates that an Amuse Bouche (A type of hors d'oeuvres, usually offered when guests are seated at the table, and served ‘with the compliments of the chef’), should be offered. The competition will last 1 hour and 30 minutes.
Tim Heming, Managing Editor of University Caterer magazine is thrilled that chefs from higher educational establishments will at last get a chance to shine: -
“It is fantastic that chefs from this sector will get the chance to showcase the skills that exist within University kitchens at such a prestigious event. Universities can cater for over 4000 main meals every day during term time, and this is the perfect opportunity to show off the creations that are usually sampled by the taste buds of the students and staff. There is a plethora of talent in universities and the bar is constantly being raised. This is the chance to see just how high!”
The 10 confirmed universities include;
- Keele University
- University of Nottingham
- Sheffield University
- Warwick University
- University of York
- University of Leeds
- University of Edinburgh
- Glasgow University
- Loughborough University
- St Anne’s College at Oxford University.
As universities fight amongst themselves to attract more and more students, the prestige of having the top university chef may just be the difference that clinches the signature.
