American celebrates silver anniversary of The Aadvantage Programme

American Airlines is celebrating the 25th anniversary of the AAdvantage frequent flyer programme - the world’s first frequent flyer programme - with a triple miles promotion.

Between now and 31 March 2006, when members fly from the UK or Ireland to the US on an eligible Business or First Class ticket, they will earn triple AAdvantage miles – enough for a free trip within Europe after one flight to the US.

Members can redeem their miles to over 850 worldwide destinations on American or any of our more than 20 AAdvantage participating airlines. Some examples include off-peak travel within Europe on British Airways to destinations such as Paris, Barcelona, Zurich and Athens for only 20,000 miles. Alternatively miles can be redeemed on American for off-peak travel to New York, Miami, San Francisco, Los Angeles or Las Vegas for just 40,000 miles.

When American Airlines launched the AAdvantage programme in 1981 with just under 300,000 members, some may have viewed the idea as just another short-term marketing promotion. But 25 years later — and more than 50 million members strong — American Airlines is celebrating the AAdvantage programme’s silver anniversary.

The AAdvantage programme consistently ranks high as an influential factor in customer choice, and we will continue to provide value to our loyal customers,” said Craig Kreeger, Vice President Europe and Asia Pacific. “This will be one of several promotions to mark this milestone and extend our sincere appreciation to our members for the programme’s continued success.”

The programme has grown to include a wide range of products and services that offer numerous opportunities to earn miles. Members can earn miles with more than 1,500 companies, including more than 35 hotel chains, more than 20 airlines, eight car-rental companies, 18 financial-service companies, and more than 200 brand name retailers. In addition, members can earn miles when making purchases with one of more than 60 affinity card products in 41 markets around the globe.

The AAdvantage programme may have been the first of its kind, but it has been a quarter century of innovation and enhancement that have truly made it the airline industry’s largest and most robust travel awards programme.
