England's first whisky in production

Visitors to the East of England county of Norfolk will soon be able to witness the first English whisky being made for more than a hundred years. St. George's Distillery, named after the country's patron saint and the country's only registered whisky distillery, became operational in November. Though the first whisky won't be available to sample until December 2009, a visitor centre and shop opens this summer, in late July.

The distillery, being built from scratch, sits on the banks of the River Thet near Thetford. The good water quality means that the people of Norfolk are likely to boast a fine whisky which will give the better-known competition to the north a good run for its money.
