Five hot adventure travel destinations

Mozambique, Angola, Mongolia, Rwanda and lesser known areas of the Caribbean - these are the five hotspots which Guerba, one of the UK's leading adventure travel companies, predicts are the destinations travellers will be flocking to by 2010.

Now celebrating its 25th season in operation, Guerba has created its list of top five predictions based on their monitoring of destinations worldwide and in-depth knowledge of the adventure travel industry as a whole.

Ian Ripper, director of Guerba says: "Guerba's programme is packed with tours that can take travellers to over 37 countries worldwide, but we are also investigating countries that show potential and are opening up after years of conflict, economic instability, or simply because they haven't been on people's radars as true travel destinations."

Mozambique is one such country. After a prolonged civil war and economic dependence on South Africa in the 1970s and 80s, a new government in 2004 is overseeing a period of economic stability and renewed foreign investment. Bordered by South Africa, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Tanzania and the Indian Ocean, Mozambique is on Guerba's radar as 'one to watch'. Angola on Africa's Southern coast is slowly rebuilding its country after the end of a 27-year war in 2002 and Guerba predict that it could take off as a destination over the next few years because of its relatively safe political situation.

Ian Ripper says: "Many people will be surprised at some of the countries in which real interest is being shown. Take Rwanda for example, which despite its past problems, has seen a small emergence in tourism, especially among French nationals. We also envisage interest in adventure tourism in areas such as the Caribbean - not normally known for trekking and adventure tours. The island of Dominica for example, offers much more than just a beach holiday - it happens to be rich in natural beauty including 5,000 ft mountain peaks and freshwater inland lakes - a wonderful habitat in which to offer trekking. Mongolia is another country, which could become an ever more popular destination - it's vast, exciting and different and there's no reason for people not to go there."
