The award-winning Thanda Private Game Reserve welcomes several new additions to the ever-growing wildlife population on the private 6 000ha game reserve in northern Zululand. The much-anticipated litter of 7 wild dog pups was born approximately 2 weeks ago. They are part of a breeding programme to increase numbers of this highly endangered species, the first of its kind at a private game reserve in KwaZulu-Natal. The litters are born underground, and remain in their burrow for the first two months of their lives, only rarely venturing out. The attached photograph is one of the first to be taken of the youngsters.
During the month of May, the birth of a baby elephant increased the total number of elephants at Thanda to 13, and last month a baby rhino was born to the mother of one of three recent introductions from the Kruger National Park. Thanda currently has 10 white rhinos, and has long-term plans which aim to increase the size of the land in order to introduce black rhino, which will be part of a community upliftment project.
Leopards have also been regularly spotted on game drives. Both males and females have been sighted, it is still uncertain as to how many traverse the land at Thanda.
The excellent game viewing together with Thanda's recent accolades firmly reinforces its position as one of South Africa's top luxury game lodges.
