Taj Mahal is Brit's favourite view in the world

Oberoi Amarvilas HotelIf we could gaze out of any window in any hotel, anywhere in the world, our favourite view would be of the Taj Mahal in India, according to a new survey out today from OctopusTravel.com, the online accommodation specialist.

This iconic image of love was ranked the best view to wake up to by over 22 per cent of respondents. The second most loved hotel view is Sydney Harbour, which gained 15 per cent of the vote, with third place awarded to the Niagara Falls on 14 per cent.

OctopusTravel.com asked the British public which hotel view they considered to be the best in the world. It seems we have love firmly on our minds as the Indian homage to a lost queen was chosen as the number one choice, above other holiday favourites such as the Pyramids or Copacabana Beach.

Top five worldwide hotel views:

1 - Taj Mahal, India from the Oberoi Amarvilas Hotel

2 - Sydney Harbour from the Four Seasons Sydney

3 - Niagara Falls from the Sheraton Hotel

4 - The Pyramids of Egypt, from Le Meridian Pyramids

5 - Copacabana Beach, Rio de Janeiro from Le Meridian Copacabana

Paul Mulcahy of OctopusTravel.com commented, "It seems as though we Brits have a strong romantic streak as we've chosen one of the world's ultimate memorials to love as our favourite view.

"Of course, many will remember the Taj Mahal for the pictures of a lonely Princess Diana sitting outside the palace in 1992, symbolising her failing marriage at the time. It seems that has only served to reinforce the building's image in people's minds."

When it comes to views within Britain, our favourite is the Lake District, with 50% of respondents citing this as their top vista. A view of Edinburgh Castle ranked second, with Big Ben in London coming in third place.
