First 'virtual dive cage' opens in Bournemouth

Visitors are being invited to come face to face with great white sharks, dolphins, manta rays and a blue whale when the world's first interactive dive cage opens (March 27) at the Oceanarium in Bournemouth.

This virtual experience comprises more than 170,000 frames of video and animation with twelve 50 inch plasma screens creating a 270 degree continuous view of the ocean. Visitors will get the feeling of being submerged in a cage underwater with metal flooring, bars and transparent acrylic panels on the ceiling and will be able to learn about the creatures' habitat and anatomies by using interactive touch screens. The images have been created using detailed computer graphics, including over 150 modelled and textured teeth in the shark's mouth.

The Oceanarium, Bournemouth presents marine life from all over the world using a walk through underwater tunnel and feeding demonstrations (open daily, adults £8, tel: 01202 311933). Bournemouth is situated on the south coast of England, 100 miles south west of London and is famous for its seven miles of sandy beaches, beautiful gardens and water sports.
