National Forest wood fair in Leicestershire

England's first large scale, multi-purpose forest in a thousand years is taking shape across a huge swathe – 200 square miles – of central England. The National Forest, spanning Leicestershire, Derbyshire and Staffordshire and where seven million trees have been planted, will host the highlight of its annual events calendar this summer.

The National Forest Wood Fair (August 27), held in Beacon Hill Country Park, with panoramic views over the growing forest, is billed as one of the most exciting events in the English countryside. Last year, visitors soared 15m high over the tree tops in a tree lift, admired heavy horses hauling timber, and listened to the stories and songs of the Wild Man of the Woods. All kinds of wood and timber products are displayed and sold, including chainsaw sculpture, wood 'mushrooms' for the garden, beautiful tables and chairs and other delicately turned wooden gems. Locally-produced food and drink will be available.
